Penang has many many kopitams(coffee shop) and not everyone is doing well. As such those mentioned here are considered popular by my standard. There is no ranking as I write according to what I can think of.
The first one in my mind is the so called one arm swordsman (独臂刀/利发茶室). The curry mee here is a must try food if you are a fan of spicy food. The food you want to eat in Penang can almost be found here except char koay teow (炒粿条). Please don't go there after 11 as the food are almost sold out the curry mee in particular. Therefore it is also a spot to gauge the State's economy and tourism. Well the price of the food are normal ranging from ringgit 3.30 to 4.50. The place can be accessed by buses and for those who drive, you can park at the petrol station and the small car park or even inside the Lam Wah Ee hospital where yous truly uses to park.

Another one to come is taman free hawker centre a.k.a twelve storey by the locals. Here houses many hawker food such as green fish, luobak, penang laksa, hokkien mee, tosai, mee goreng just to name a few. The best time to go there is afternoon for the hawkers start their business at about 1.30pm and certain food stalls will close at 6.30pm. There are also some stalls open at this time to continue the night time business.
Two row of shop houses with many kopitiams explain well why Island Glade is a popular area for eating. The front row is occupied with six and the back three. Most famous one is genting cafe where the zhu chiang fen is said to be one of the best in Penang. Yours truly favours the one at the back row called o & n coffee shop (草原咖啡茶室) and regularly patronising its famous wanton noodle. Need to be patient while look for parking, the city council people has so far been tolerant to illegal parking here. The clamping of vehicles seldom executed here. However, who knows one fine day it may happen to the unfortunate.
